Fil Rouge
A project by Elena Bellantoni

Video and installation

Fil Rouge it’s the result of street performance, it’s an attempt to devour the city by using a red common thread.
To me the city become the central character to understand the meaning of the space in our contemporary society. On one hand, human beings can be conceived of as artificial structures: humanity is architecturalzed. On the other hand, it is possible to think about buildings as a bodies: architectures become humanized. The city is born, grows, conceives, reproduces and dies; it has sex, as suggested by the idea of the city reaching a climax. The city is also a specifically textual body. Indeed, it is a network of narratives that we ourselves weave as we move trough it.
Fil Rouge develops this idea of the city as a body, the blue and the read some how are the veins of this big body, I connect the spaces creating a kind of visual trail into the city: I eat the body of the city using my body, my action. Fil Rouge has an impact on the urban landscape, some points of the streets become a big package such as traffic lights, trees, road signs etc.. My point it’s to create a kind of visual and fiscal tension into the city.
Research interests
My research focuses on the relationship between the body and space, especially in this last year Istarted to explore the urban space.
The urban space linked to the idea of non-places, spaces of transit and passage of the great metropolis where the individual is completely immersed inside the mass consumer, and easily she/he can lost her/his own identity.
My current practice run between video and installation. My main interest , at the moment, is the concept of the city related to the idea of travel. Last year I employed video to document my own performances and found video to be the most appropriate medium to explore the relationship between myself as a performer, the viewer and the space between and around both. Now, the topic of exploring the notion of travel - and the associated concepts of time, space and duration - video seems to be most suitable medium that will assist my research, help develop new ideas and explore the way in which my art practice communicates the relation between the idea of travelling and the city
My video works are performative, I often try to establish with the viewer a kind of "voyeristic" relationship. I also conceived the video as material on which to work during the post-production, I am interested in some way on the material quality of the projection.
I always work by project using the "media" which I think is the best to develop the idea that I want to develop. That’s why in my current exhibition Transparenz I felt the need to develop an installation site-specific consisting of sculptures in plaster , photographs, video and drawings on paper.
My work then follows the fil rouge of my personal experience: on the border between my own world surreal, imaginary and the external one, social and political.
